Railbike FAQs

  • Chevron down What is a railbike?
  • A railbike is a four seat pedal powered vehicle that is designed to allow you to ride and explore sections of track that are closed off to other traffic, enjoying the beauty of the Adirondacks at a more leisurely pace. Our railbikes are proudly manufactured right here in Utica, NY.

  • Chevron down How does it work?
  • You can book your railbike adventure online at www.adirondackscenicrailbikes.com, or by calling Adirondack Scenic Railroad Customer Service at 315-724-0700, or 1-800-819-2291. You can also book to ride the train from Utica to Thendara, or just travel to Thendara. When booking the railbikes, you can choose a one way trip from the Thendara station to the Carter station and then ride our speeder from Carter back to Thendara. Or you can choose to ride the speeder from Thendara to Carter and then ride the railbikes one way back to Thendara. You can also choose to do the round trip from Thendara to Carter and back.

  • Chevron down How long is the ride?
  • A one way ride is about an hour and a half. That includes an hour on the bikes, and a half hour on the speeder. The round trip is about two hours. That includes an hour on the bikes one way, followed by an hour on the bikes back the other way.

  • Chevron down What about kids?
  • There is no minimum age requirement. Infants would need to be in a front-mounted child carrier (such as the Baby Bjorn) worn by an adult. You must provide your own carrier. Toddlers can ride in their own seats using a five point harness which we do provide. Children who are at least 4 years old can ride in their own seats using the standard seatbelt.

  • Chevron down Is there a weight limit?
  • The suggested weight limit is 350 pounds. We do not check your weight. This suggestion is for your comfort.

  • Chevron down Is it difficult?
  • Railbiking can be enjoyed by people of nearly any age and ability. There are slight grades, both up and down, as well as level sections of tracks along the way. We recommend a leisurely pace so as to not overexert yourself, and also to give yourself time to take in and enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Adirondacks.

  • Chevron down What happens if the weather is bad?
  • The bikes will run in both sunny and rainy weather. If the weather is potentially dangerous, such as a lightning storm, potential tornadoes, etc., then we will cancel the rides. This is up to the discretion of the railbike operator in Thendara. If this happens, then you will be able to reschedule your railbike adventure for another day.

  • Chevron down Should I bring anything?
  • We recommend bringing things such as a camera, drinks, snacks, sunscreen, bug repellent, and appropriate outerwear for the weather, such as coats, hats, or rain gear. All of these items and more are available for purchase on site at our gift shop in Thendara.

  • Chevron down Is anything prohibited?
  • Do not bring alcohol, drugs, or glass containers. Smoking is prohibited. Do not bring pets (Pet friendly bikes are in the process of being fabricated).
